If hook sizes confuse you, you’re not alone. Here’s the cheat sheet that took me years to learn:
- Smaller number = smaller hook (#8 is tiny, #1 is medium).
- Larger number with /0 = bigger hook (1/0 is smaller than 5/0).
But size isn’t just about fish mouth—it’s about bait.
| Your Bait | Hook Size to Try |
|---|---|
| Worm (4–6 inch) | #2 – 2/0 |
| Worm (7–10 inch) | 3/0 – 5/0 |
| Live minnow | #6 – #2 |
| Shrimp | #2 – 2/0 |
| Big swimbait | 5/0 – 8/0 |
Golden rule: The hook gap should be about half the width of your bait’s body. Too big, and you tear the bait. Too small, and you miss the hookset.
And always—always—check the point. A perfectly sized dull hook catches nothing. A slightly undersized sharp hook catches fish.
